If you have seen signs of mold in your home and are wondering what the best course of action should be, information is power. You must be able to make well informed decisions on how to eliminate it completely. You may or may not have heard the terms “mold removal” and “mold remediation”. At first glance, they seem to be the same thing, but they are completely different. It is important to know the difference; especially when you are going to hire a company to conduct a service.

What is Mold Removal?

If you were to find mold stains on your walls or ceiling, of course you want to eliminate them, as soon as possible. Unfortunately, due to its nature, mold cannot be completely removed. Cleaning mold off porous surfaces is not going to eliminate the entirety of the mold. Mold grows and spreads. Identifying the problem areas where mold is growing is key. You must also restrict the affected areas and eliminate them to prevent more areas from becoming infected. In essence, removing mold is not possible. You must mitigate it in a remedial process.

Types of mold

You already know that mold is something that grows. You also know that it varies in colors like black, orange or green. It appears on food, walls, ceilings and other materials in and outside of the home. What you probably do not know, is that mold is like a disease. It is a fungus that grows in the shape of thousands of strings and it originates only in humid environments. Mold causes bio degradation of natural materials and their species and colors vary. Here we list the 12 most common types of mold:

It is often pink and grows typically in household systems: humidifiers, cooling coils, drain pans and window sealants.

It is a velvet-textured mold brown colored that usually grows in dampness

There are about 185 species of aspergillus so it can appear in many different colors. It is usually found in American households.

It is commonly found behind wallpapers or wooden surfaces. It is usually pink or turns to brown.

Water damaged homes are an appropriate environment for the growing of this mold. It has a musty odor and color changeable from white to grey or black.

It is the only type of mold that can grow in warm or cold conditions. It is the one that can be in carpets, fabrics or upholstery’s. It is olive-green or brown colored. It causes skin rash and lesions.

It also can grow even in cold temperatures over carpets, wallpaper and other fabrics; it is often pink, white or reddish.

Often found in white or grayish color, you may see it near air conditioning, HVAC systems and ducting.

It is an allergenic form of mold. It is easy to recognize by its characteristic blue or green colored surface with a velvety texture. Penicillin mold is often found in water-damaged homes and buildings. It is found in materials such as carpets, wallpapers, ducting and even in mattresses.

It the terrible well known as the “black mold.” It is dark greenish or black in color and has a slimy texture and proliferates in humid environments like wooden, card boarded, papered areas.

It is generally white with green patches and it grows in wet surfaces like wallpaper, carpets or other wet surfaces.

It proliferates in wetness and water and is typically confused with other types of mold because it can grow together with other species.

What is Mold Removal?

We already know you cannot remove mold, but you can remediate it. Remediation is not a temporary solution, it is a complete fix for mold issues. The key to mold remediation is based on returning mold levels back to normal (dormant) or natural levels. As we said before, mold cannot be completely eliminated, so the techniques used during mold remediation are intended to control the mold spore levels in the areas affected within your home. Mold remediation targets problem areas, controls spore reactiveness and extinguishes the harmful mold.

When you contract a professional mold remediation service, they use chemical components that require you to take some precautions. Before technicians arrive, you must place pets in a separate room, or in the backyard. Mold remediation usually takes a minimum of two days. The first day at which time our technicians will treat the affected are with biocide, which is an EPA approved liquid commonly used to eliminate the mold. On the second day, our team of experts will complete the encapsulation process; this process takes place by spraying the area with a type of paint or whitewash. This process is done to contain the remaining mold spores and prevent them from propagating further. Lastly there are other test completed to confirm the spores have reverted to the dormant state.

Only professional services can diagnose mold growth and its causes. We can identify the affected areas (sometimes they are not found easily, because sometimes the area that is affected is not evident). They identify areas with excessive high levels of active mold, and they can balance those levels to “normal”. Mold remediation includes extinguishing toxic elements like black mold. At JD Restorations we have our professional team ready to conduct your Mold Remediation. We will find the root of the problem, contain it and we will eliminate the conditions that would reactivate the spores.

The remediation process must be performed only by a company equipped and experienced with mold remediation. At JD Restorations, we have methodically established a set of steps to mitigate the mold.

Identifying the type of spores (the source of the mold) and their level of attention. This will help technicians to determine the type of treatment to be applied.
Our technicians will select the most adequate procedure, as well as the chemical products to be used in order to attack the mold. This depends on the type of mold as well as the surface it is in: porous or non-porous.
Sealing and containing the area that is infected by the mold to prevent it from spreading further.
Starting the mold remediation.
Removing and discarding affected material such as wood, wallboard and other porous building materials that were affected by the mold.
The use of HEPA-filtered vacuums to remove spores on the air.
Finding the origin of mold, its humidity sources: water intrusion, plumbing leaks, rain seepage, etc.

The presence of mold in home can cause health problems such as: allergic reactions and respiratory problems. When mold spores come into contact with your body, they can cause many other issues. They can get into your eyes causing eye allergies. Spores can come in contact with your skin and cause skin reactions; spores can be breathed in and cause respiratory problems, asthma and chronic cough. In the worst cases, like the spores from black mold, can cause neurological problems and death.
